While the leaked retailer email pointing to a May 18 GTA VI pre-order start has been spreading fast, one of the more plugged-in voices in the industry is now urging fans to slow down. The email looks real — but that does not necessarily mean the date is.
What the insider is actually saying
Tom Henderson, speaking alongside colleagues on a recent video roundtable, said he does not doubt that the affiliate email from the US retailer is authentic. What he doubts is the timing.
According to him:
- No internal sources he speaks with have flagged a pre-order launch for Monday.
- A campaign of this scale would almost certainly have been teased by Rockstar in advance.
- Take-Two's earnings call on May 21 is the much more logical stage for any big marketing reveal.
The working theory from that side: the third trailer and pre-order window were likely shuffled internally at the last minute, and the prepared affiliate email simply went out with the old dates still attached.
Why a surprise Monday launch would be strange
There are also practical reasons to be skeptical of a sudden pre-order opening with no official word from Rockstar:
- Major retail chains typically need several days of server and logistics prep for a release of this magnitude.
- There are currently no visible signs in brick-and-mortar retail that a campaign is being staged.
- A pre-order launch without a trailer or formal announcement would leave a huge amount of marketing value on the table.
The roundtable also floated a more cynical possibility: that the leaked email could function as a low-cost way to gauge fan interest, essentially free market research generated by the resulting hype cycle.
The more realistic window
Based on the insider read, the expectation is that meaningful new GTA VI information — including any confirmed pre-order date, pricing, and the long-rumored third trailer — is unlikely to land before July or August 2026, once the summer marketing push properly begins. The May 21 earnings call is seen as the more plausible moment for Take-Two to outline what that campaign will look like.
What this means for fans
None of this rules out pre-orders opening soon. The email exists, multiple affiliates received it, and the November 19, 2026 release date is still being treated as locked in. But the takeaway from the insider side is clear:
- Treat the May 18 date as a rumor, not a confirmed event.
- Watch the May 21 earnings call closely for any official roadmap.
- Expect the real marketing barrage — trailer, pre-orders, editions, pricing — to ramp up over the summer rather than this week.
In other words: keep the hype, but maybe keep the credit card in the drawer for now.
